hello out there..I'm Katt and have cervical dystonia in my neck.

I started having symptoms about 5 yrs. ago. After 2 yrs. I finally was diagnosed w/ dystonia. I'm in my 40's and have always been in good health and so far, now w/ treatmt, still am.

At this point, I'm trying to get connected w/ all the dystonia bulletin boards in order to learn all I can about all the different types. I take botox shots, artane and Klonopin for my trouble. The botox works great for me and has for almost 3 yrs. I'm not able to work at this time.

I'm told that for the most part, my dystonia will stay only in my neck since it developed in adulthood. I surely hope so, but I know for some it does progress to other parts of the body.

Ever since I've been taking botox, I have not had any trouble swallowing. My dr. always asks each time I see him if I've had trouble swallowing and I haven't been. It's been about 3 wks. since I had my last shots. The past couple of days though, it seems that I have had some trouble swallowing.

Is this the way SD starts, or is this just a side effect I'm having now?

I surely will let the dr. know if this problem gets any worse or whatever. Have any of you had a side effect of botox causing it hard to swallow? And if not then what is done for you?

just wondering

Kathy, I don't know as very much about cervical dystonia as I have AD/SD. When I started with the voice problem, I did not have any trouble swallowing. The problem started with my voice breaking off now and then and sometimes it would change and sound like I had breathed helium. I did have swallowing problems with the first few BoTox injections. I had to be very careful with water and normally used a straw when drinking. This only lasted a day or two.

Hi Kathy,

Wow, I've finally found someone with the same movement disorder as mine, this is great!

My movement disorder occured after a chiropractor treatment on June2,2000, I had seen two neuroligist in Red Deer Alberta at that time, neither of which had ever seen anything like it, however both were quick to perscribe something to treat my problem. Finally on Oct.2,2002, I was sent to the Movement Disorder Clinic in Edmonton Alberta and finally diagnosed with Cervical Dystonia. I am a 43 year old (female), have worked from the time I was 12 years old and have just had to go on a medical leave from work because of my condition,(I had been working up until Dec.7,2002 with this movement disorder as a food attendant.) This disorder affects the entire left side of my body however isn't prevallent until the mid afternoon. My head nods, my hips sway and my left leg and arm turns in, with my hand clenched. I am thankful that was able to see Mr. Wayne Martin at the Movement Disorder Clinic in Edmonton however I am very sceptable about recieving botox injections as I bad reactions to any medication administered to me. Late in in evening I find it hard to comunicate, it's like I am tounge tied, weird feeling! I am now seeing a different chiropractor which has been benifical to me. My muscle spasms have decreased form aprox. 20 a day, down to 2 per day. I am watching my diet and getting plenty of exercise which I'm sure has helped also, (I enjoy swimming, and playing billards).

Hoping to hear from you soon. God Bless You and I wish you all the best!

Kim

Hi Kathy!

I also have Essential Tremor, Cervical Dystonia and Adductor Spasmodic Dysphonia. I've had all of this since I was about 11 years old, but is progressive, as we all know. My voice also had a tremor. I have Botox injections in the back of my neck for my head tremor.........and much relief of tightening of the muscles in my neck and shoulders, what a relief! I've had 36 Botox injections (each) in my neck and vocal cords. I did choke some when I first had the injections on thin liquids......mainly because I was not concentrating on what I was doing. It does pass. I use a straw to drink everything.

Good luck........
