I have vocal cord dysfunction and cannot project my voice in noisy environments. I do much better in a quiet place. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to cope with this problem? Marion |

Marion - Stay away from noisy places? (sorry, could not resist). Suggestions: if you have to go to noisy places, sit in a corner with your back to the wall. I think this helps project your voice towards the other people. There are several voice amplification systems available if you don't mind wearing them. John |

Marion, I also have a soft voice and find it difficult to project my voice. About a month ago I bought a Chatter Vox amplifier from Bruce Medical Supply for $169. It works very well and I thought about posting my experience with it. Your inquiry pushed me to post it. It is a little heavy and I feel conspicuous when I wear it, however, the pluses outweigh the minuses. Here is what I found: 1. It works great in the car and even someone in the backseat can hear me 2. I use it when I'm on the phone and it works very well there also 3. I use it in restaurants and the wait person hears me easily most of the time 4. I set the volume between 9 and 10 o'clock , but in a noisy environment I may need to go a little higher, and that is easy to do. My wife encourages me to use it. When I don't use it and I get a negative reaction to my voice I realize how much it helps. When I'm out I keep the headset mike around my neck rather than on my head. That makes me less self conscious. Some people do look at me and once in awhile someone asks me what it is. If anyone reading this has a Chattervox I'd appreciate it if you would tell me if the speaker emits a slight hiss. My unit does, but I don't think it did when I bought it. Bruce Medical told me to return it and they will check it out, but I don't want to give it up, especially if the hiss is normal. I do find it a nuissance when I'm eating, or if I need to blow my nose. You won't believe how often you put your hands to your face until you wear one of these things. But I'm not sorry that I bought it, and if I only used in the car and on the phone it would be worth the price. Bill Piche I have a new email address : use either vze4ykvi or shirley.piche@verizon.net

Douglas Whitley M.D. AD/SDI am an emergency physician in a high volume high acuity ER.The noise level is substantial.A recent study showed that using a stethoscope has become almost worthless in this type environment because of the noise.I have found the Chattervox to be the difference between retirement/disability and continuing to be able to practice. My voice is almost impossible to hear over the background din. When people ask why I wear it I turn it off and talk a short time and they understand immediately. It is amazing how parallel your experience is to mine regarding riding in cars , eating at restaurants, my normal settings and times I wear it around my neck.I often wear it around my neck and have it turned off.My wife is the biggest supporter of my wearing it.I routinely get questions from fellow physicians about this instrument. This gives me an in to discuss dystonia. It has been interesting what has come out of these discussions. It took only a short time for me to get over the "conspicuous feeling" of wearing the unit.Did you watch the super bowl? What were all the announcers and analysts wearing? Many persons have described on this site their difficulties talking on the phone. My primary solution is my chattervox and to a lesser degree my amplifier telephone at home. Many people have described the "telephone dragon ".Someone on this site once explained that we talk louder on the phone.I found this is true for me.Because of my voice amplifier I receive sufficient feedback that I talk softly on the phone resulting in far less spasms and a far better telephone voice. |

Sorry about punching the reply twice. I did forget to mention I have no hiss. One of my fellow physicians asked me today why I hold my two-way radio to my mouth instead of my amplifier.A demonstration with the resulting extreme feedback was convincing. You quickly learn the circumstances to turn it off such as going to the restroom. The loud squeal feedback on occasion is substantial.Recently in line at the airport I had a loud feedback squeal and this got me pulled out of line and searched.Douglas Whitley M.D. AD/SD |

Once again, ditto for Douglas. (btw, I am the "telephone dragon" poster) To add two points to Douglas's comments. 1. It is valuable to think of our amplifiers not just in terms of the effect on those of us who use them - i.e., we remove limitations, but are conspicuous. Amplifiers also are a kindness to people who work with us and socialize with us; it makes dealing with us easier for them. Personally, I'm willing to use a device that weighs a pound and gets looks or questions in order to make interacting with me easier for my friends and business associates. 2. That feedback squeal can be very useful for getting the attention of a waiter in a loud restaurant that has poor service. Regards,

Bill--I've not detected any kind of hissing sound in my ChatterVox unit. Note that you say it is helpful on the phone. That hasn't been my experience. Larry ADSD |

Bill, I also have the chattervox and also didn't notice the hissing sound when I first got it. I took mine back (I live near there distribution center) and the hissing is normal. I hope this helps. Thanks for your comments. John SD/AD |

Marion I have AB/AD/SD and have the voice saver amplifier, by super duper publications. This unit was recommended by my speech pathologist. I have been using it for about four weeks and it seems to do very good, especially in noisy areas. The cost of the unit was $124.95 and you have a 90 day trail use. If you have any questions I can answer please email me.
