I was just told by Dr.Anthony Jahn on 1/22/03 that I have mild case of spasmodic Dysphonia. He is considered to be one of the top Otolaryncologists. I was told about this doctor when I went to a seminar for the NYC Singing Teacher Association. In fact he is the doctor of Met Opera singers. However, I do not agree with the treatment he has suggested. He wants me to see Dr. Andrew Blizer who works with him in his NYC office. He says Dr. Blizer addresses this problem with Botox injections into the vocal chords. Three years ago I could not speak a word no one could understand me. When this problem occurred no one knew what was wrong with me. Every Otolaryncologist I went to said that the vocal chords were healthy looking, they had a good color and came together correctly. At present my voice has gotten better. I did nothing but to rest it and when I was able to speak again which took about five years I went back to my voice lessons. I know a women that has spasmodic dysphonia. She also has trained to be an opera singer just like I have. Catherine the women I mention has never been able to speak clearly and she has had several botox injections. I am living proof that it can subside with proper rest and reduction of stress factors. My life has changed quite a bit. I met a wonderful man and have a lot less stress in my life. I am very eager to help other people and encourage them that there is hope even without botox treatment. |

Good for you Katherine! I'm so glad that you found relief from resting your voice. I was officially diagnosed with mild ADSD in August of 2002 (not that long ago), but have tried to work with and overcome the symptoms of ADSD through "natural" approaches for about 10 years. I resisted Botox until the bitter end! I reluctantly had my first injection Dec 11, 2002 and now I could kick myself in the head for not doing it sooner. My voice is so smooth and resonate now. And there is no strain or effort on my part to speak. I love my voice! I still wish I could have achieved it your way -- but I am grateful for botox now. Best wishes, Lynn |

Hey, whatever works, right, Katherine? Personally, I really like the relief Botox provides for me and am very grateful for it. But I know for some the side-effects are too great or it doesn't work at all. Some people have made amazing efforts and achieved successes by learning new speaking techniques, etc. I always thought my voice was a result of anxiety & stress but really those are just contriuting factors that make the physical condition worse. But it is a good approach to limit these contributing factors. Stress, along with caffeine, alcohol, speaking too much, etc. put added strain on the voice and can worsen the condition (I believe). So your approach is coming from the other end but is just as valuable. Probably a combination of the two might be best for all of us. I'd love to rest my voice for 5 year but unfortunately I have to be on the phone all day with work. But at least I still have a job, right? Thanks. Bill
