Hi
This is my first day on the BB and have read some wonderful posts. Just a few things about myself. I think that I have had SD for approx. 10yrs but have only been officially diagnosed for 1yr. I work as a Maintenance Supervisor at a powerplant in Western Kansas which can tend to be a rather noisy environment. As far as my SD, things have worsened over the years as I stress and strain to make myself heard and understood. Contributing to the problem is the workforce there is getting older and the individuals that I deal with regularly are hard of hearing - plus- they are mandated to wear hearing protection! So as you can see, talking with SD over the noise can be straining. On 1-6-03 I had my first injection, (had to drive 5 hours to get there) have experienced the breathiness that everyone talks about, but the biggest shock was the dramatic shift downward in frequency range. Singing is next to impossible (not that anyone wants to listen) If I try to yell, nothing comes out but air. I am somewhat concerned about this at work for obvious safety reasons. So far, talking above the noise at work is next to impossible and I’m not sure if it’s going to get any better. I’ve read a couple of posts on others judging you by your voice, and I can certainly relate to that. SD definitely has an effect on how you are portrayed and also how you portray yourself. Since I have had the botox, my self confidence has improved. The strain that I would have when dealing with disciplinary issues with employees put them ill at ease and they would become more defensive. Now I can handle things in a more calm manner since I don’t have to strain to be heard. Bottom line, there are pros and cons to botox and I will have to weigh them heavily

I have ABSD/tremor and I have a difficult time making loud noises, including voicing. I think it is definately a safety issue for all of us with SD. I try to wear a whistle when I feel I might otherwise need my voice for protection (ie walking in the woods in Yellowstone, I was afraid I would scare a bear and then not be able to yell! I am, of course, completely serious!) I suggest wearing a high quality coaching-type whistle for safety signals in situations, as needed. Best wishes. Sarah Bayle |
