Hi, just wondered is or how useful speech therapy has been for you after botox shots? I'm currently contemplating it. I've read and experienced first hand myself that speech therapy alone is not very effective with sd, since this is a neurological based disorder. On the other hand I've read that speech therapy is nowadays adviced after botox shots, I guess in order to have the good period prolonged. Any experience with this? Silta ad/sd (fi) |

Silta: I had my first Botox injection on 1-17 of this year. I was talking almost normally fifteen minutes after the injection! I personally do not feel the need for speech therapy. I had it this past summer before I had a diagnosis and it did not do much then...hence my pursuing a diagnosis and considering the options I had. I am so pleased with the way my voice sounds now and family and friends are amazed at the clarity and volume that I have. I am hopeful that it will stay this way for quite a while. Pat ad/sd Alaska |

The stronger your vocal cords are, the better they will respond, with or without Botox. Not every speech or singing teacher works on voice strengthening but it's essential. |

I received my first Botox injections last April, and started weekly speech therapy last July. This has been very helpful in helping me overcome bad speech habits I developed over a period of twelve years until I was diagnosed with AD/SD. Last September I received my second Botox injections. I believe that because I was in speech therapy, my voice is much stronger than it was after the first injections. I am starting to experience spasms occasionally, but I don't feel like I need to have the Botox treatment yet. So in my case I have to say the speech therapy was very helpful. Tony Brancato, AD/SD |

Silta, All, I, too, was wondering about this. I know that SD affects how I breathe and as symptoms return I do try to place my voice in a way to lessen them. Probably not doing this as effectively as one could. I have heard ftom others that therapy helps in prolonging the posiive effects of Botox. Bill |

This sounds like a good use for speech therapy. I went through a year and a half of it myself and while I feel it never came close to curing my SD, it did teach me a lot of vocal techniques and excercises that occasionally still use to get my voice working a little better. |
