Hello. I was just wondering if anyone else has tried laryngeal massage? I often use this. It doesn't help the quality of my voice but helps with the tightness I often feel in my throat. Before I started massaging my larynx, my throat would almost feel "closed off" as if something were stuck in it. Has anyone else had this same feeling/discomfort?

Hi Tonya, funny you should ask!!! I have been reading about laryngeal massage for the past several days and copied an article regarding the manuevers for my DO to read. I know that some DO's are trained in this technique but you say it doesn't help your voice?? Do you do the massage yourself? Actually, I believe it may help with muscle tension but don't know about SD. Even though it doesn't help your voice its good to know that it helps the tightness in your throat.

My doctor who diagnosed my SD sent me immediately to a Speech Pathologist that was knowledgeable and had treated SD patients for more than 20 years. One of the first things that she taught me was to do the larengal massage on my neck. It does help the tightness in the neck and seems to release the tension from the spasms. She also told me to give up caffiene drinks. Actually, after dealing with the undiagnosed SD for 5 years, I think she "turned my life around". I will always be grateful to her.

Yes, I do the massage myself. The speech pathologist I went to taught me how to do it. At first it was difficult for me to do but not so much anymore. I usually do the massage at least once a day. It really does help with the tightness. I strongly recommend it.
