I just wanted to indroduce myself. About 9 months ago I went to a new doctor and she mentioned to me that I had spasmodic dysphonia. I always new I had a "funny" voice. I never went for further testing. It is really starting to get bad though. I work in a medical office and I am on the phones alot. I always have patients tell me "You sound awful. Are you sick?" I say no. Sometimes I have a hard time getting my words out. I feel out of breath trying to get words out. I started noticeing a difference back in 1999. I have been having a hard time swallowing. I hate to drink liquids. Sometimes I end up choking on it. I sound awful when I leave a message on someone's answering machine. They tell me I sound broken up. I am starting to hate to talk. Any support would be appreciated.

Thank-you,
Elaine

Hi Elaine,

It does sound like you have Spasmodic Dysphonia. It can make life tough. Maybe you can try going to the speech and hearing center at a local college or hospital. They may be able to help you.

Let us know how things work out.
