I have AD Spasmodic Dysphonia. For the last five weeks my ears have been plugged and I feel pressure in my head. I am not sure if this is just part of the sinus infection I had or if this is a side affect of SD. Does anyone know? Nothing seems to relieve this pressure and pain in my ears and I have to fly in a few days.

Sandy - my advice would be to see your doctor.

Ear pain is not associated with SD. SD is a neurological movement disorder that involves the brain's control of the vocal cords.

Unfortunately having SD doesn't protect us from developing other unrelated conditions and I would be 99% sure there is no connection whatsoever. Just because you have more than one condition at the same time doesn't mean they are related.

I had a persistent ear/sinus infection for several weeks last year that developed out of a bad cold. I needed pretty strong antibiotics to get rid of it. The first one I took wasn't powerful enough to deal with it. At one stage I even needed a sinus scan to check out what was going on, and to rule out naso-pharygeal cancer because only one ear was involved. At this stage of the infection I was seeing my SD otolarngologist and he never raised the possibility of a connection between the ear pain and my SD, and I'm sure there was no connection.

Good luck, and see your doctor - quickly if you have to fly, because you might need to try more than one med in an attempt to get rid of it.

Thanks, David. I have taken a powerful antibiotic and am now taking Claritin, dimetapp and the dr gave me a nasal cortisone spray yesterday. I've just never had my ears plugged up for six weeks before and began to wonder if the SD had anything to do with it. Glad to hear it doesn't because I don't want to have to live with this.
