Has anyone heard of or had personal experience with the use of Dextromethorphan (a non-prescription narcotic used in many cough syrups) with relation to SD? I have heard that there is serious medical interest in exploring this. In addition, from what I have read DXM can be a dangerous drug when not used as directed.

I am so shocked to hear any possible connection!!! When I was in high school, I first developed my voice problems at about 17 years old. When our circle of friends wanted a "buzz" and didn't have any access to alcohol, we would each drink an entire bottle of Robitussin DM (dextromethorphan). Kids, don't try that at home. Very, very, very stupid. That was ten years ago. I had only done this twice, for a total of two bottles (in addition to the regular doses for actual colds). I definitely know that these overdoses were within one year before the onset of my SD (maybe even less than a year). I haven't kept in contact with any of those friends for 10-11 years, so I don't know if they have experienced any voice problems potentially linked to DXM.

I am very curious to learn where you heard about a possible connection. Do you think your SD (if you have it) could be linked?

I recently talked to a person at National Institutes of Health. They are in the process of doing a study to see if dextromethorphan is of value in treating SD.I have seen an article a few years ago touting its efficacy in treating irritable bowel syndrome(aka spastic colon). The genetics of IBS is very likely similar to some forms of dystonia so there is some rationale to this.I have not tried it and know of no one who has.

I don't have time to recap my comments in this BB re my N=1 experiments (i.e., with myself) but see www.buffalo-creek-press.com for a full report re my experience with Dxm, how it has HELPED, along with other strategies as well, and also why I decided to give it a try. It has anti-seizure properties which MAY explain why it helps (at least me).
